Why it is in this guide

The First Steps in English course is expressly designed for beginners, with a visible language curriculum rather than merely English-led games. Its short weekly format offers a practical Hong Kong study stop for Japan-based families.

Who it may suit

Ages 6–11 with very basic English, and parents who can organise a Hong Kong base and meals. More fluent readers should choose the separate writing, theatre or debate streams instead of beginner English.

What to weigh up

A school-campus course is not regular-school admission, and no academic placement advantage is established. Hong Kong lodging and daily packed lunches remain family responsibilities; a full-day camp is not an overnight-care service.

Operating history and evidence

The official 2025 archive,2026 catalogue and ESF annual reporting show repeat delivery of language-plus-sports camps. Recent search results were mainly promotional roundups; no dependable dated independent parent review of First Steps was established. Older operator quotes about swimming/playgroups are not evidence of this English course.

Age, language and eligibility

The official FAQ expressly welcomes overseas students, and language courses accept non-ESF pupils. First Steps has lower-primary 6–8 and upper-primary 9–11 groups and is only for beginners/very basic learners. No Japanese interpretation is promised. Younger children have separate courses, not automatic eligibility for First Steps.

What the days look like

Morning language is typically 09:00–12:00; full-day combinations add supervised packed lunch and 13:00–16:00 sports, with some Wan Chai combinations ending 16:15. First Steps practises everyday vocabulary and conversation through role-play and group work. Its 2026 materials repeat after four weeks; not every course runs at every campus.

Parents, accommodation and transport

Day attendance only. Families book their own accommodation and airport/local transport; Island School had an optional paid bus. All full-day pupils bring lunch, snacks and water: no onsite catering or food deliveries. For under 8 s joining sports, general policy recommends a parent stay onsite; confirm how this works in a full-day combination.

Included costs and the family budget

No exact First Steps whole-course price was verified. The 2026 catalogue links to week/campus pricing, but the public search now returns no available First Steps classes. Do not use unrelated sports or teen-course prices. Request a fee breakdown including compulsory materials/uniform if any; add lodging, meals, travel and optional bus separately.

JPY estimates use 2 October 2026 reference rates, normally rounded to ¥1,000, with whole-yen values near filter boundaries. Payment rates and fees differ. Rates and sources

Before you book

Confirm the 2027 English course itself, exact campus/week, class size, pickup rules, English support and any under 8 parent-presence requirement before booking flights. Check entry/study permission separately. School facilities and participation certificates do not guarantee English progress or regular-school admission.

Cancellation and refunds

Weekly-camp withdrawal by the preceding Thursday gives a refund minus HKD 200 per child per week; later withdrawal has no refund/credit. The current policy gives a 50% non-refundable course credit, valid one year, for severe-weather/force-majeure cancellations. That may be hard for a short-stay visitor to use; confirm the applicable 2027 terms.
